Alamo Handyman is here for all of your professional handyman needs...but that doesn't mean that you can't tackle some projects on your own!
We are here to help you build your own home improvement toolbox, so that you can tackle DIY projects with ease. Check out our list of the 6 must-have tools for your home:
1. Phillips and Flathead Screwdriver
Every homeowner should own one of each major screwdriver type. Whether you need to tighten loose hardware or assemble a piece of furniture, you will need either a Phillips head or flathead screwdriver, so be sure to get one of each!
Although it is helpful to get a full screwdriver set with multiple sizes, these two basics will get you going and allow you to complete most basic projects. If you really want to step up your game, we encourage the purchase of an electric screwdriver to save you any future wrist pain!
2. Hammer
This is a toolbox staple, and we recommend the basic claw hammer. The weight is up to you; you can choose a heavy duty hammer or a lightweight hammer for basic around-the-house jobs.
3. Measuring Tape
From hanging picture frames to planning out floor remodels, and everything in between, a measuring tape is a necessity! Be sure to get one that is at least 20 feet so you can easily measure most surfaces in your house.
4. Pliers
Pliers are good for more than just home improvement projects! A heavy duty set can get you out of quite a few jams, including dislodging items in small places, tightening hardware, and simply getting a tight grip. If you plan on getting just one set of pliers, we recommend an adjustable set to keep in your toolbox.
5. Nail and Screw Set
Every basic toolbox needs a set of wood nails and a set of various screws. You can use these items for hanging decor, replacing missing screws, or joining two items together. Screws and nails are a necessity for large projects, craft projects, and general home upkeep.
6. Level
Another household staple--you must have a level! These can be purchased cheaply, or you can even download one on most smart phones! A level will ensure that all wall hangings are aligned in your home, but can also help you figure out if you have foundation problems or if a piece of furniture needs repair.
When deciding what you need to build your own toolbox, it is important to think of the balance between home improvement and general home upkeep. These factors can influence the size, weight, and type of item you want in your toolbox. additionally, if you are planning on tackling any special projects, you may need additional items and materials!
